Stroke & Neurological Physiotherapy in Bradford

After a stroke or with a neurological condition, the brain and nerves need to relearn how to control movement. Neurological physiotherapy uses repeated, purposeful practice of real tasks to drive that relearning. At WellCare Medical in Bradford, stroke and neurological physiotherapy focuses on the abilities that matter most for independence: getting up, walking, balance, and using the arm and hand.

Who we work with

  • people recovering from a stroke, once hospital or in-patient rehabilitation has finished
  • people living with other neurological conditions that affect movement or balance
  • people recovering from a brain injury or concussion

We work alongside your doctor, neurologist and any other therapists involved in your care.

How neurological physiotherapy works

The nervous system can adapt and form new connections, an ability called neuroplasticity. It responds to practice that is specific, repeated and challenging. Your program may include:

  • Task practice. Standing up, transfers, walking, stairs, reaching and grasping, repeated many times.
  • Strength and endurance. Building up weakened muscles and overall fitness as you are able.
  • Balance and coordination. Exercises that train you to stay steady and recover when you are put off balance.
  • Walking training. Work on step pattern, speed and safety, with or without a walking aid.
  • Education and family training. Safe ways to help at home, how to pace activity, and a home exercise program.

Your first visit for stroke and neurological rehabilitation

Your physiotherapist reviews your medical history and any reports from the hospital, and asks what you most want to be able to do. They assess your strength, sensation, coordination, balance and walking, and how you manage everyday tasks. Goals are set with you and your family. A family member or caregiver is welcome to attend.

What to expect from recovery

Improvement is usually fastest in the first months after a stroke, but people continue to make gains for much longer with regular practice. Progress varies widely from person to person. We measure it with standard tests so you can see change over time, and we are honest about what is and is not improving.

Stroke is an emergency

If you notice sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech, sudden confusion, loss of vision or a severe headache, call 911 immediately. Do not wait to see whether it passes.

Related care for stroke and neurological rehabilitation

A neurological assessment gives a detailed baseline of strength, reflexes, balance and coordination. If you would like to drive again, we offer a driving reintegration assessment. After a head injury, see concussion assessment. Ongoing steadiness work is covered under physiotherapy for mobility and balance, and acupuncture or massage therapy may help with pain and muscle tightness.

Common questions about stroke and neurological physiotherapy

How long after a stroke can physiotherapy still help?

There is no fixed cut-off. Recovery is quickest early on, but people can improve strength, balance and walking years after a stroke with regular, targeted practice.

How often should I attend?

Often once or twice a week at the start, combined with daily practice at home. The home program is where most of the repetition happens.

Do I need a referral?

It depends on your insurance plan, so check with your plan administrator before your first visit. Bringing your hospital discharge summary helps us plan safely.

Is neurological physiotherapy covered by insurance?

It is billed as physiotherapy, which most extended health plans cover. We offer direct billing.
