The spine protects the spinal cord, and between each pair of vertebrae a nerve root leaves to supply the muscles, joints and skin. When the joints around those openings are stiff, swollen or irritated, the nearby nerves can become sensitive. Chiropractors have traditionally called this "nervous system interference". At WellCare Medical in Bradford, chiropractic adjustments are used to restore movement in the affected spinal joints and reduce the mechanical stress on the tissues around the nerves.

What nerve irritation from the spine can feel like
- tightness or aching that keeps returning to the same region
- symptoms that change with posture, such as after long sitting or looking down
- tingling, pins and needles or a heavy feeling in an arm or leg
- muscles that feel weak or tire quickly on one side
- stiffness that makes you move carefully or guard one area
These symptoms have several possible causes, which is why an assessment comes before any treatment.
What adjustments can and cannot do
An adjustment is a controlled movement applied to a specific spinal joint. Restoring normal joint movement can reduce local irritation and muscle guarding, and many people report less pain and easier movement afterwards.
Adjustments treat the joints, muscles and nerves of the spine and limbs. They are not a treatment for conditions of the internal organs, and we do not present them as one.
How we assess and treat
- a history of your symptoms and general health
- tests of spinal movement, reflexes, muscle strength and skin sensation
- adjustments or gentle mobilization for the joints that are restricted
- mobility and stability exercises to support the change
- advice on positions and pacing that reduce stress on the area
If your examination suggests nerve compression that needs medical investigation, we will refer you to your doctor.
When to see a doctor first about nerve irritation
Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or symptoms after a significant injury. Numbness or weakness that is steadily getting worse should also be seen by a doctor.
More help with nerve irritation
If you have clear travelling pain, tingling or numbness, see chiropractic adjustments for pinched nerves and treatment for sciatica and leg pain. For a detailed look at nerve function, our clinic offers a neurological assessment. Our Bradford chiropractor can also combine adjustments with physiotherapy, massage therapy or acupuncture.
Common questions about adjustments and nerve irritation
What does "nervous system interference" mean?
It is a traditional chiropractic term for irritation of the nerves where they leave the spine, linked to stiff or irritated spinal joints. Other health professionals usually describe the same thing as nerve root irritation or mechanical back and neck pain.
Can adjustments improve how my nerves work?
Restoring joint movement can ease irritation around a nerve root and reduce symptoms such as referred pain and muscle tightness. Adjustments are not a treatment for diseases of the nervous system.
How will I know if the treatment is working?
We re-test the movements and nerve signs that were affected at the start. You should also notice everyday changes, such as sitting longer or turning your head more easily.
